The Best Fence for Wind on the Wasatch Front

Anyone who has lived along the Wasatch Front knows the canyon winds. East winds pouring out of the canyons — and the gusts that come with a passing front — can flatten a fence that wasn’t built for them. If you’re on a bench, near a canyon mouth, or anywhere the wind funnels (think Cottonwood Heights, Draper, and the east benches), building for wind isn’t optional. Here’s what actually survives.

Why fences fail in wind

A privacy fence is a sail. The taller and more solid it is, the more force the wind puts on it — and that force is transferred straight to the posts and their footings. Fences fail in wind for three reasons: posts that aren’t set deep enough, footings that are too small, and solid panels with nowhere for the wind to go. Fix those three and a fence holds.

The material matters — but the build matters more

How to spec a fence that survives the wind

When you get quotes, the wind-worthiness is in the details — make sure yours includes:

  • Deeper posts. Utah’s frost line already calls for footings around 30 inches; in high-wind and taller-fence situations, deeper is better. Ask how deep the posts are set.
  • Bigger concrete footings on end, corner, and gate posts — the ones that take the most load.
  • Reinforced posts (steel-insert or heavier-gauge) on privacy runs, especially for vinyl.
  • Closer post spacing on long, exposed runs so no single panel carries too much.
  • Wind gaps or a semi-privacy style where full privacy isn’t essential — letting even a little air through dramatically cuts the load.
